Becoming British: The Test, the Ceremony & Settling In
This topic is your own journey: book it, sit it, pass it, apply — then stand up and make the promise. Order the steps, match the ceremony, and lock the test’s key numbers.
Before we start — have a guess
You may know these already — this is, after all, your test.
How many questions are there in the real Life in the UK Test?
Primed ✓
What score do you need to pass?
Primed ✓ — now the whole journey, end to end.
The test, in five numbers
Bring the same ID you booked with, expect photo and security checks, and leave phones and notes outside — nothing goes into the test room with you.
Order your journey
Tap the steps in the order you will live them.
Ordered ✓ — you are somewhere on this road right now.
Match the ceremony
Tap an element, then tap what it is.
Matched ✓ — oath or affirmation: the promise is the same, the wording is your choice.
Lock the key numbers
The real test has ···· questions and lasts ····. You pass by scoring at least ····, and each attempt costs ···· — booked only through GOV.UK.
Locked ✓ — 24, 45, 18 of 24, £50. Four numbers, zero surprises on the day.
Flip the details
Answer in your head first, then tap to check.
What happens if you fail?
You get feedback by topic, wait 7 days, then book and pay again. Most people pass within a few attempts — preparation is the difference.
Does a pass ever expire?
No — a pass in the Life in the UK Test never expires. Keep your unique reference number safe — you will need it for your application. (Passes from before December 2019 came with a paper letter instead.)
What else does citizenship require?
English at level B1 (speaking and listening) — or a degree taught in English — alongside the test. Both boxes must be ticked.
How soon must the ceremony happen?
Within 3 months of approval, at your local authority. Miss the deadline and the approval can lapse — book it as soon as the invitation arrives.
All flipped ✓
True or false — no thinking time allowed
Quickfire complete ✓ — 17 is the classic trap; the answer is 18.

Your result
Say it in your own words
Walk a friend through the whole process: booking, test day, failing or passing, and the ceremony. Say it out loud or write it down — then compare.
Reveal a model answer
Book at least three days ahead on GOV.UK — the only official route — and pay £50. On the day, bring the ID you booked with; the test is 24 questions in 45 minutes on a computer, and you need 18 right to pass, learning your result the same day. Fail, and you wait seven days and pay again; pass, and the result never expires — it supports your settlement or citizenship application. New citizens then attend a ceremony within three months, swear an oath or make an affirmation, and receive their certificate of naturalisation.
