Methodology & corrections
A practice bank is only worth using if its answers are right. This page explains exactly how the CitizenReady bank of 1,240 questions is made, how it is checked, and what happens when something is wrong.
Where the questions come from
- One source of truth: the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition) — the book the real test is drawn from. Every question in the bank tests a fact or idea from its five chapters.
- Written independently: every question, its options and its explanation are written from scratch for CitizenReady. We study the topics and facts other practice sites cover — so our coverage matches the syllabus — and then write our own questions. Nothing is copied from any other site, and the handbook's own text is never reproduced.
- Four formats, like the real test: single-answer, true/false, choose-two and NOT questions, balanced across all five chapters.
Where the law has moved on
The handbook is a fixed book; the UK is not. Where a law or institution has changed since the handbook was published, the keyed answer is the handbook's answer — because that is what the test asks — and the explanation states the modern position alongside it. You will see that pattern, for example, on the Welsh Senedd's members and on Northern Ireland's Assembly.
How the bank is audited
- Coverage audit: the facts tested by the incumbent practice sites were mapped one by one against the bank — 408 of 408 facts are covered.
- Answer audit: the full bank was re-checked question by question against the handbook; a later independent data audit cross-checked it against official sources and a random stratified sample of 75 questions, and found no wrongly keyed answer.
- Fresh-eyes rounds: the site and the bank have been through repeated independent audit rounds since launch; every confirmed error found was corrected and re-verified on the live site.
The translations
Explanations are also published in Persian, Urdu, Bengali and Arabic. Each language's full set was produced by native-speaker-briefed translators and then checked by independent validators who had not translated it — around a thousand corrections were made in that process. We do not claim a human native review we have not had: the files are structured so a human reviewer can sign them off quickly, and error reports for translations are treated as corrections like any other.
Corrections policy
- If you spot anything wrong — a fact, a date, a translation — email [email protected] with the page or question and what looks off.
- Confirmed errors are corrected in the bank, the app, the printable Workbook and the audio edition together, so the fix exists everywhere the question does.
- We would rather correct a fact in public than defend it: the audit findings and fixes are summarised on this page as they happen.
CitizenReady is an independent study aid, not affiliated with the Home Office. The official handbook remains the definitive source for the test.
